Tuesday at Coffee Time our topic was BATTING - What are the differences.

Having been in the fabric/batting industry for over 35 years a lot of information is absorbed as I have worked directly with the manufacturers and the RD teams.

Thank you for letting me share this information and continually giving us your feedback.

What is Wrap-n-Zap

Pellon®’s Wrap-N-Zap® is a microwave safe product is made of 100% Natural Cotton Batting. When used in the microwave, it will trap the moisture inside to produce a perfect baked potato or a well steamed ear of corn. It can even be used for warming rolls and tortillas.

  • Natural
  • 100% Natural Cotton Batting
  • Packaged Size: 45″ x 1yd

Projects made with Wrap-N-Zap®, such as a potato zapper, are especially great for cooking potatoes or corn on the cob and heating bread and tortillas. The Cotton batting helps to insulate, which cooks or heats the food evenly.

We do not talk about bleached batting much but this is a very good item for many reasons

  1. Same product has Hobbs 80/20 but in white and is wider.
  2. 108" wide instead of 96" so it perfect if you are making charity quilts that are full size. Just cut in half. No waste
  3. 80% Cotton / 20% Poly Perfect for every project and competitively priced.
  4. Easy to quilt with machine or by hand.

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Bleached Cotton Blend Batting is highly recommended for use when working with white or very light colored quilts. The bleached 100% cotton fibers, combined with the fine, white polyester fibers, provide a very white batting that will keep quilts made with white or light-colored fabrics nice and bright.

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Bleached Cotton Blend Batting is manufactured in the same manner as our Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 (Natural) Cotton/ Poly Blend Batting – it is lightly bonded and needle-punched for exceptional strength and durability and it’s machine-washable (and who doesn’t love that?!).

Hobbs Heirloom® Premium 80/20 Bleached Cotton Blend Batting is wonderful to quilt by hand or machine. Close quilting yields a flat, low-loft appearance, while more space between stitching lines yields a slightly higher loft.

Quilting/stitching should be every 4″ inches, or closer, and quilters may experience shrinkage of 3-5%.

WOOL - Yes we recommend wool for your next project.

  1. Breathable and warm in winter and cool in the summer
  2. Thicker loft than 80/20 which will showcase your stitches.
  3. Lightweight - perfect for lap quilts for elderly.
  4. Yes, it washes beautifully.

The loft and resilience inherent to the wool fibers in Hobbs Tuscany 100% Wool Batting assist in emphasizing the quilter’s piecing and stitching and, because the wool has no ‘memory’ for creases, submitted show quilts will look and hang beautifully even after being folded during transit, judging and pre- and post-show storage.

Hobbs Tuscany 100% Wool Batting is ideal for use in all climates as the natural wool fiber breathes, allowing excess heat to disperse away from the body. It will certainly keep you warm, but it’s great for use in quilts made for use in hot, hot places like Texas, where we produce this batting!

Hobbs Tuscany 100% Wool Batting should be paired with medium or dark fabrics – if paired with with white or light-colored fabrics, natural wool could slightly darken the fabrics. We recommend quilters test this wool batting with their chosen fabric(s) to see if ‘darkening’ will be an issue. Often it’s not an issue, but it’s always best to test it to be safe!

This batting may be stitched up to 4″ apart, and it is machine washable* (once inside a quilt), with shrinkage of 3-5% expected.

Our top selling batting for all your projects

Why we love Pellon 80/20

  1. Beautiful hand, soft to the touch and does not stretch.
  2. Scrim binder ols it in place.
  3. Excellent for machine or hand needles.
  4. Natural colour
  5. Batting does not migrate when quilting.

Natural Blend with Scrim Batting is a soft, durable and substantial batting created for quilters who want cotton with the added benefit of wash-ability and good stitch definition. It is made of 80% ultra Clean Cotton and 20% Polyester with a scrim binder that allows for stitched areas up to 8-10″ apart. It has an expected shrinkage of 3-5%. It has a soft loft, creating less resistance when hand quilted and a soft, quilted finished look. Hand, machine, and longarm quilters all love this blend.
