Machine Embroidery 101
Week One – Welcome to Machine Embroidery
Welcome to the world of machine embroidery!
In our first class we’ll go over some of the basics and
stitch out a design on woven fabric. The topics we’ll discuss include:
• Stablizers,
• Threads
• Needles
• Hoops
• Designs (where to find them)
• How to hoop your fabric
We will also be stitching out a basic embroidery design.
Supplies you will need:
o Embroidery machine with embroidery arm
o Bobbins for your machine and bobbin thread
o Embroidery needles (size 75 or the appropriate size for the thread you will be
using)
o A hoop for your machine. 100mm x 100mm (4”x4”) or larger
o One piece of cotton/woven fabric large enough to fit into your hoop with 2” extra
on all four sides.
o Cut away OR tear away stabilizer the same size as your fabric
o The following thread colours (recommended Wonderfil Polyfast 40wt.)
One darker colour and one lighter colour (i.e. dark and light blue)
o Tweezers, small scissors (embroidery scissors are recommended)
o Marking pen/pencil/chalk
o Any additional sewing or embroidery tools you use regularly
o Pen and paper for taking notes
